Aesop

Concrete in the jungle

While metropolises are often described as ‘concrete jungles’, in the case of Bangkok it may be more apt to speak of ‘concrete in the jungle’. Built largely in the 1970s, the Thai capital is saturated with this modest, inexpensive, practical material: underfoot, on façades, and even overhead, where the heavy elevated tracks of the Skytrain obscure the sun. Yet this concrete world is streaked with exuberant growth. The tropical humidity of the Chao Phraya floodplain allows flora to flourish, as ficus creepers and climbing vines thread their way through cracks in the cement. It is this unlikely overlay that gives the city its harmony: an orthogonal frame, continually colonised by bursts of verdant wildness.

The walls of our store at Emporium are made of concrete too. Their heterogeneous aspect is created by varied mixes of cement, sand, and aggregate. Terrazzo sits alongside pebble wash, creating textures both smooth and coarse, all tinted in a muted powder-pink. These finishes alternate across diagonal partitions, cutting the space into a strict yet dynamic grid.

Aesop

That rigour, however, softens in two adjoining alcoves, dedicated to skin care and fragrance. Their curved walls would not exist without the curiosity of artist Ori Orisun Merhav, who once immersed herself in the Thai jungle. There, she discovered the Kerria lacca, a red insect whose resin is used to make shellac. Worked like glass, this amber lacquer now coats the alcoves’ timber surfaces, giving them a mysterious, organic lustre. As if carved out of a massive trunk, these spaces offer a curvilinear, free-flowing counterpoint to the discipline of concrete.
